After last week’s city mayhem that left more than 20 people dead and hundreds nursing injuries, Daily Monitor asked readers to share their experiences of the riots. Here are your stories:

When the boots were turned onto the Fourth Estate
My sojourn into the field was purely accidental. As a chief sub editor, I rarely go to the field—instead sitting in the newsroom and waiting to process copy. But this was not your everyday story.

News filtering in on that Friday evening was indicating that the army had besieged the Kabaka’s palace—and the army spokesman, albeit indirectly, had hinted to us about moving troops “to secure the Kabaka”. It was a story that needed eyewitness verification—and that’s how I ended up joining our political editor Charles Mwanguhya and senior reporter Tabu Butagira—on the ill-fated journey—like Okonkwo when Ikemefuna was headed to the slaughter in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart

By Barbara Among
THE Broadcasting Council has lifted the suspension of the Catholic Church’s Radio Sapientia. Sapientia was one of the five radio stations that were closed last week amid riots that rocked Kampala city after the Police stopped Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s tour of Kayunga.

Others were two of the CBS, Suubi and Radio Two (Akaboozi ku Bbiri) The Broadcasting Council argued that the stations were inciting violence.

“Radio Sapientia has since apologised for the misconduct of its staff and has made an undertaking to comply with the Electronic Media Act. Management has acknowledged that due to the lack of professionalism exhibited by the presenters and producers of the programmes in question, they are to be suspended pending conclusion of investigations,” a statement issued by the council’s chairperson, Godfrey Mutabazi, said.
